Dakshinamurthy is an avatar of Lord Shiva, who is considered as the teacher and guru of all knowledge and wisdom. He is also worshipped as the god of music, dance, and yoga. Dakshinamurthy is depicted as a meditating yogi sitting under a banyan tree with his right foot on the demon Apasmara, who symbolizes ignorance and illusion. He has four arms, holding a rosary, a damaru (hourglass-shaped drum), a small flame, and a book. The book symbolizes knowledge, the flame symbolizes enlightenment, the damaru symbolizes rhythm, and the rosary symbolizes concentration. The banyan tree under which he is seated is symbolic of the universe, with its roots representing the foundation of creation, and its branches representing the different paths of knowledge. Dakshinamurthy is considered as the supreme embodiment of spiritual knowledge, and his teachings are believed to liberate human beings from ignorance and illusion.
